Trump reportedly rejects Iran’s seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

Unnamed US officials cited by The Wall Street Journal said President Donald Trump ruled out Iran’s roadmap to restore normal maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz within a week, hours after Tehran put it forward and days after he threatened to “annihilate” Iran at the UN. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the plan requires the US, on an accelerated timeline, to honour commitments from the failed 17 June Islamabad MoU: release $12bn in frozen Iranian assets, lift oil sanctions, end the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and cease all hostilities including in Lebanon for seven days. Analysts say Trump may opt to resume attacks on Iran after November’s midterm elections.
