Six killed and 15 injured in shooting at Kraków market square
Six people were killed and 15 injured after a man drove into Kraków’s main market square at about 3pm and began firing at random from his car, Polish police said. He used a long military-type firearm and was dressed in military style. Officers later “neutralised” him as he tried to flee and took him to hospital.
The square is a leading tourist destination in Poland’s second-largest city. Emergency services were on the scene and people were asked to stay away while police investigated. City officials said officers were also conducting an operation on nearby Dietla Street. An interior minister was reported to be heading there.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the shooting after initial local media reports citing police and the fire department. He said the interior minister was keeping him informed and that police were examining the background and circumstances of the attack. Justice minister Waldemar Żurek said prosecutors, police and other relevant services were already working at the scene and that the perpetrator would be held fully accountable and severely punished. President Karol Nawrocki said he was deeply concerned by the reports and that his thoughts were with the victims, those injured and their families.
Earlier this year Euronews reported that legally owned firearms in Poland had surpassed one million for the first time. Police statistics cited in that report said Poland issued a record 50,700 gun permits in 2025, and that the number of active permits registered that year was almost double the figure for 2015.
