Workers uncover mass grave of 572 people in northern Sri Lanka

Workers extending a cremation ground in Chemmani, Jaffna, accidentally uncovered human remains in February. By August, archaeologists had recovered the skeletal remains of 572 people, including children and infants, the largest mass grave found in Sri Lanka. Many Tamils believe the dead were civilians killed extrajudicially during the civil war; families of the disappeared are seeking investigation and justice.
