Scientists identify first new penguin species in more than 100 years on Kerguelen Islands

An international team led by researchers in Chile and UC Berkeley used genetic evidence to classify a gentoo population on the remote Kerguelen Islands as a distinct species, the first new penguin named in over a century. The work shows gentoos comprise four species; warming oceans may leave several island populations with little suitable habitat by 2050.
