“Smoldering” gut-cell death priming may explain why IBD relapses

A study of about 900 human gut biopsies and patient-derived mini-intestines found that in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal cells can stay abnormally poised to die even during apparent remission. This hidden “smoldering” defect is proposed as a molecular warning sign that keeps future IBD flare-ups possible when patients feel well.
