Bournemouth beat 10-man Milan 3-0 in historic Europa League night
Bournemouth marked a historic European night with a commanding 3-0 victory over seven-time European champions Milan. Marco Rose’s side seized control from the outset, taking an eighth-minute lead when VAR ruled that Koni De Winter had handled Evanilson’s header and Justin Kluivert converted the resulting penalty.
Milan’s difficult task became almost impossible before the half-hour. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan pushed Tyler Adams in the face while a corner was being delivered, earning a red card and conceding another penalty. Omari Hutchinson was withdrawn so Lorenzo Torriani could enter in goal, but Marcus Tavernier calmly beat the substitute after a lengthy delay to double Bournemouth’s advantage.
Despite introducing Adrien Rabiot at half-time, Ruben Amorim’s team offered little response in driving rain and strong winds. Bournemouth continued to threaten through Ben Gannon-Doak, while referee Vasilis Fotias denied them a promising advantage when Lewis Cook was clear through, instead stopping play to book Fikayo Tomori. Substitute Amine Adli completed the scoring with a curling 22-yard free-kick late on. For a club that narrowly escaped relegation from England’s fourth tier in 2009, defeating Milan in a competitive match at its modest south-coast home represented a remarkable milestone.
