Hurricane Polo lashes Mexico as Nolo strengthens near Hawaii

Hurricane Polo is battering Mexico’s southwestern coast while Nolo became a hurricane Thursday night and is turning toward Hawaii’s Big Island, the US National Hurricane Center said. The Big Island could see 15 to 30 inches of rain through Saturday, with life-threatening flooding possible on Maui; the heaviest rain may fall on the same saturated southeast area hit by Hurricane Lala in August. Hawaii’s governor issued an emergency proclamation.
