AfD wins state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Left Party leads in Berlin

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 37.9% of the vote, according to an infratest-dimap exit poll, narrowly ahead of the center-left Social Democrats. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) failed to enter the state parliament, a result Merz called a "disaster" while pledging to press on with reforming Germany. AfD co-leader Tino Churpalla claimed a mandate to govern and called for Merz to resign. Meanwhile, the Left Party took first place in the Berlin state election.
