TikTok to pay Alabama at least $100m and limit teenage use in first state settlement

TikTok settled with Alabama before a Monday trial, paying at least $100m and possibly up to $300m if 40 other state attorneys general sign similar agreements. Alabama called it the first state settlement in nationwide litigation over social media and teen wellbeing, alleging TikTok misled parents about tools to shield children from harmful content. Teens get a two-hour daily cap, no access midnight–6am, paused school-hour notifications, stronger age verification, banned beauty filters, and a non-personalised feed, mirroring Meta’s US state deal.
