NextDC shares jump 42% after Goodman and Digital Realty seek stakes
Shares in Australian data-center operator NextDC jumped more than 42% on Thursday after Goodman Group and U.S.-listed Digital Realty moved to acquire stakes of up to 9.9% each. The companies sought the shares at A$9.50 apiece through an aftermarket bookbuild conducted on Wednesday, according to a regulatory filing by NextDC. The company said it was not aware of the final outcome of the purchases.
NextDC’s board described the move as “opportunistic,” pointing to its timing just two weeks after the operator disclosed a power-supply delay at its M3 Melbourne data center and revised its fiscal 2027 guidance. Goodman and Digital Realty told investors that they currently had no intention of making a takeover bid, while reserving the right to pursue one later. That wording leaves open the possibility of a deeper strategic or corporate move without committing either company to an offer.
The sharp rise in NextDC contrasted with weakness among U.S. data-center stocks. CoreWeave fell about 9% and Iren dropped roughly 11.2% on Wednesday. Those declines followed sweeping Democratic victories in U.S. midterm elections, which increased expectations of tighter scrutiny and possible restrictions on new data-center development—measures that could slow the expansion of infrastructure supporting artificial-intelligence workloads.
