Russia and China veto UN resolution to extend monitoring of Iran sanctions

Russia and China vetoed a US-backed UN Security Council resolution that would have extended the mandate of independent experts monitoring sanctions on Iran, reimposed last year after Western powers accused Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal. Eleven members voted to extend the mandate while Pakistan and Somalia abstained. Iran thanked Russia and China for blocking what it called a "politically motivated" US draft.
