King Charles refers Jamaica slavery reparations petition to privy council for legal advice

Jamaica’s culture minister Olivia Grange told parliament on Tuesday that King Charles referred the country’s slavery reparations petition to the London-based privy council for legal advice. Filed on 7 September 2026, it asks whether forced transport of Africans to Jamaica was lawful, whether that amounted to a crime against humanity, and whether Britain must provide restitution for slavery and its lasting effects. Grange called the referral a really big deal.
