Spanish police clear migrants from Ceuta beaches after July border surge

Spanish riot police fired rubber bullets and used batons on Friday to clear migrants sleeping on the beaches of Ceuta, an 18.5 sq km enclave on Morocco's coast held by Spain since 1580. More than 72,000 people crossed from Morocco in an unprecedented rush in late July, and some 10,000 remain. Authorities built temporary housing for 1,700 inside the port; NGOs say thousands are still unhoused, sleeping rough in camps.
