Scientists record a Pacific Northwest subduction zone breaking apart in pieces

In Science Advances, LSU geologist Brandon Shuck and colleagues report an unusually detailed view of a subduction zone off Vancouver Island beneath the Pacific Northwest actively tearing apart. The work suggests these massive tectonic systems may die piece by piece rather than shutting down all at once, with implications for ancient plate fragments, volcanic activity, and earthquake risk beneath Cascadia.
