OpenAI valued at $1.25 trillion, as rival Anthropic nears its IPO
OpenAI has secured a $1.25 trillion valuation after raising $11 billion in a new funding round reported by Bloomberg, cementing its position among the world’s most valuable companies. The capital injection follows an earlier financing round in March that brought in $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. Echoing recent reports from the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is continuing to pursue additional investments that could lift the current round's total to $20 billion.
The current target marks a recalibration from earlier ambitions. The company had initially hoped to secure up to $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation, but moderated expectations following a retreat in tech stocks and midterm election results that signaled growing public sentiment against artificial intelligence firms and data center projects.
The fundraising also highlights divergent paths between top industry competitors. While rival Anthropic filed its S-1 paperwork last week to pursue an initial public offering, OpenAI is taking a slower approach. CEO Sam Altman noted that the company is prioritizing model safety over going "guns blazing" toward an IPO, though he previously acknowledged that waiting too long to go public would also be bad for the world.
