Rubedo Life Sciences trials new topical cream to reduce skin aging
Mountain View-based biotech firm Rubedo Life Sciences has presented early trial data for an experimental topical cream designed to clear senescent cells from aging skin. In a four-week study of 11 patients with atopic dermatitis, the cream reduced participants' biological skin age by an average of about two years—with one individual seeing a drop of over 11 years—based on Mitra Bio's epigenetic clock. The treatment also lowered inflammation markers and boosted elasticity-linked collagen by 10 percent.
The drug operates by transiently turning off GPX4, a survival protein, making lingering "zombie" cells vulnerable to ferroptosis-driven cell death without destroying surrounding healthy cells. In a separate trial of 18 people with actinic keratosis, a sun-induced precancerous skin condition, the formulation reduced scaly skin lesions by 46 percent over a single month.
Under CEO Frederick Beddingfield and chief scientific officer Marco Quarta, Rubedo plans to explore treatments for psoriasis, hereditary hair loss, and an over-the-counter alternative to retinol, alongside an oral pill for metabolic aging. However, longevity experts Eric Verdin and Anthony Rossi caution that epigenetic clocks remain unstandardized and that clinical efficacy in everyday healthy skin is still unproven.
