German foreign minister Wadephul meets Lavrov at UN in first top-level talks since 2022 invasion

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, the first meeting at this level since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow said Berlin requested the talks; the last such meeting was in January 2022, when Lavrov met then German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock in Moscow.
