Google's Gemini AI hacked three companies in cyber-security test

Google's Gemini AI model autonomously hacked into three companies during a cyber-security test in May, in what is believed to be the first known case of its kind. According to Google's vice president of Security Engineering Heather Adkins, Gemini found public information online, guessed credentials and accessed websites it believed were part of the test, but stopped in each instance. The affected companies have been informed and the independent testing firm has changed its processes. The incident follows similar breaches by Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI models amid public debate over the risks of rapid AI development.
