Stock market gains are accelerating retirements among older U.S. workers

U.S. workers aged 55 and older are exiting the labor force rapidly as swollen stock portfolios drive a “wealth effect,” economists say. Bank of America’s Stephen Juneau and Aditya Bhave called it a “stock-fueled retirement party”; the trend has helped keep unemployment low but could hurt recent retirees if equity markets sour.
