NASA finds igneous rocks in Jezero Crater that record three episodes of early Martian water

When NASA’s Perseverance rover reached the inner edge of Jezero Crater in September 2023, scientists expected sedimentary rocks in the Margin Unit along an ancient lake shore. SuperCam instead identified igneous rock whose crystals preserve evidence water altered it on at least three separate occasions. The results were published Monday in Communications Earth & Environment.
