The deadliest Ebola outbreak on record in the Democratic Republic of Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo variant, may have begun months before its May 15 declaration. Retrospective data indicates the first known case was a healthcare worker from Mongbwalu in Ituri Province who developed symptoms around April 24 or 25 and died in Bunia.
