Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić resigns after more than a year of protests

Serbia's president Aleksandar Vučić has resigned after more than a year of student-led protests over alleged government corruption. The demonstrations were galvanised in 2024 by the collapse of the Novi Sad railway station roof, which killed 16 people. Vučić had already announced his resignation in June and is now standing as his party's candidate for prime minister in upcoming parliamentary elections, since Serbia's constitution bars a third presidential term. A series of resignations by officials failed to placate protesters, whose summer demonstrations turned to unrest amid accusations of police brutality. His presidency was due to expire next year.
