CERN begins replacing Large Hadron Collider magnets for high-luminosity upgrade

CERN has started replacing the Large Hadron Collider’s inner triplet quadrupole magnets during its third long shutdown as part of the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. Crews cut the first magnet interconnection at LHC Point 1, where Director-General Mark Thomson marked the milestone. New superconducting magnets will produce fields about 40% stronger, squeezing particle beams tighter before collisions to raise luminosity for the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
