After Oleshky ceasefire event, Trump meets only Putin envoy Dmitriev and touts a possible deal beyond Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump met Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy and head of the U.S.-sanctioned Russian sovereign wealth fund, after a White House event First Lady Melania Trump hosted on the temporary Oleshky ceasefire she helped negotiate. Russian and Ukrainian officials were also at the event, but Trump told reporters on Thursday evening that he had met only Dmitriev.
He restated his pledge of a “big, beautiful agreement” on Ukraine and refused to disclose what they discussed, saying only that it would be a large deal going beyond Ukraine and that it “might involve all of Europe,” adding that “everyone’s gonna be thrilled.”
On Friday, Trump’s son-in-law and diplomatic envoy Jared Kushner said the president had talked with several European leaders about a broader European security architecture for lasting peace. Kushner wrote that the aim was practical arrangements addressing the security concerns of all sides, reducing the risk of future conflict, and creating a more stable, predictable security environment. The remarks come before U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10-11 involving Russian and Ukrainian officials. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and is poised for another winter bombardment of Kyiv.
