Marine Heatwaves Conceal Months of Additional Warming

Researchers analyzing long-term observations from 20 U.S. estuaries found that marine heatwaves often sit within longer periods of unusually warm water. Conventional event-based measurements underestimated cumulative heat exposure by more than 150% on average, obscuring ecosystem stress before and after peak heat.
