Democrats Win Both Chambers of Congress in US Midterms
Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 US midterm elections, giving them greater power over legislation and oversight of Donald Trump’s administration. They captured House seats in districts Trump had carried by as much as 18 percentage points in 2024 and flipped at least seven Senate seats, in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The change will be especially significant from January 2027, when Democrats take control of House committees. Their committee leaders will be able to decide which bills advance, issue subpoenas and launch investigations into the administration, Trump’s family and their business interests. The result could therefore reshape the prospects for cryptocurrency legislation and increase scrutiny of digital-asset companies linked to Trump.
Market commentary identified affordability, high energy costs and renewed interest-rate increases as important election concerns. Prediction markets had already placed the likelihood of a Democratic sweep at about 75% on Tuesday, before the results were announced. The outcome was nevertheless viewed by some commentators as a serious failure for Republican candidates to connect with voters.
