Heatwaves and wildfires expose a third of the world to extreme ozone pollution

Record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires combined with human emissions exposed 34 percent of the global population to extremely poor ozone air quality during the first eight months of 2026, according to a report published Wednesday by the EU's Copernicus Climate Atmosphere Monitoring Service. Asia experienced the highest exposure levels.
