Democrats Take Control of Congress in Sweeping Midterm Victory
Democrats seized control of both chambers of the US Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, turning a predicted “blue wave” into what France 24 described as something closer to a “tsunami”. Their victories extended into Republican strongholds that had remained out of reach for generations, giving the party a sweeping mandate and reshaping the balance of power in Washington.
The result was also a major political setback for President Donald Trump. Tens of millions of voters used the elections to deliver a sharp rebuke to his presidency, with the scale of Democratic gains exceeding many analysts’ expectations. The outcome suggested that dissatisfaction with the administration had spread well beyond the usual Democratic base and had translated into decisive victories in traditionally Republican territory.
France 24’s international affairs editor Kethevane Gorjestani said the results represented a dramatic expansion of the anticipated Democratic gains. With control of both the Senate and House, Democrats emerged from the November 3 vote in a position to challenge the president far more effectively and to exert greater influence over the national political agenda.
