Democrats win US House and Senate from Republicans
The Democratic Party has won control of both the US House of Representatives and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing President Donald Trump and the Republican Party a major political setback. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said losses for governing parties are common in US midterms, but argued that the scale of the Republican defeat was striking. She linked it chiefly to the consequences of the Iran war and said Trump’s repeated promises, dating from his 2016, 2020 and 2024 campaigns, not to pursue an interventionist foreign policy had come back to haunt the Republicans. Weidel said ending the wars in Iran and Ukraine quickly was in the interests of Europe and Germany.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Qalibaf celebrated the result online, saying American voters had rejected the war in the Middle East, whether motivated by conscience or the cost of living. He offered a vague warning that any US government ignoring public opinion would face consequences. A statement attributed to Iranian supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said those expecting a change in US policy through partisan shifts were “seriously mistaken.” China called the election an internal US matter while expressing readiness to manage differences with Washington. Russia, meanwhile, said a Democratic-led Congress would not alter its position on Ukraine, though officials were waiting for the final results.
