The Guardian view on the Nepal-Tibet floods: a spur to action on climate

Three weeks after a glacier collapse on the Nepal-Tibet border, at least 1,300 people are confirmed dead and more than 5,000 remain missing, some trapped in tunnels at 13 damaged hydropower plants. Nepal's foreign minister, Shisir Khanal, has asked the UN's loss and damage fund for $20m toward a total rebuilding cost of about $5bn, including up to 20,000 replacement homes. A new study by Imperial College London and the World Weather Attribution project found fossil fuel pollution helped destabilise the mountain and worsen the disaster.
