Serbia's president Aleksandar Vučić resigns to run for prime minister

Serbia's populist president Aleksandar Vučić has resigned to contest the early parliamentary election on 25 October as prime ministerial candidate for his rightwing Serbian Progressive party (SNS). Barred by the constitution from a third presidential term, Vučić has been either president or prime minister for 12 years. He faces a youth-backed movement born of protests over the November 2024 Novi Sad station canopy collapse that killed 16 people, seeking to end the populists' 14 years in power.
