Ethiopia returns to civil war as Tigray forces launch offensive to oust Abiy Ahmed

Ethiopia’s fragile peace since a 2022 truce ended this week when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, allied with six other armed groups, launched what its leaders called a “defensive” war to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The TPLF ruled Ethiopia for three decades until 2018. On Wednesday it accused government forces of firing on its troops; Addis Ababa disputes that account.
