Germany commits for first time to phasing out fossil fuels by 2045

Germany published a roadmap Wednesday pledging for the first time to phase out fossil fuels by 2045, beyond prior carbon-neutrality goals. Europe's largest economy targets raising renewable electricity from 55% to 80% by 2030, adding 12GW onshore wind and 215GW solar, reaffirms coal exit by 2038 with a possible 2035 date, and cuts methane emissions 30% by 2030. Andreas Sieber of 350.org called it a notable shift but warned the economic ministry still pushes greater gas use.
