Renewed Tigray fighting on September 23 threatens 2022 peace deal and risks wider Horn of Africa war

After months of rising tension between rebel forces and Ethiopia's federal government, Tigrayan forces launched a major offensive on September 23, with fighting also reported in Afar and Amhara. The escalation threatens the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement that ended the prior Tigray war between Addis Ababa and the TPLF. Horn of Africa expert Martin Plaut told DW spillover could involve Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudanese forces and drag the whole region into war.
