New tiger cat species identified in Bolivia, first in over a century

A tiny wild cat from Bolivia's Yungas cloud forests has been formally named Leopardus tilcayo, the first new living feline species described in more than a century. Known as "tilcayo" to local communities, it measures 46cm long, weighs about 1.4kg and has light brown fur with irregular rosettes. Researchers, led by National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz and University of A researcher Jonas Lescroart, published the findings in Current Biology. Scat samples suggest it eats small rodents, and camera traps indicate it may be nocturnal. Tiger cats are cryptic species that cannot easily be told apart by appearance.
