Trump appoints Jay Clayton to lead US Super Intelligence Force
US President Donald Trump has created a “Super Intelligence Force” to coordinate federal policy and preserve US leadership in artificial intelligence. The body will be chaired by Jay Clayton, Trump’s AI czar and director of national security, and will work with agencies including the Pentagon, Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security and Federal Trade Commission.
According to a charter reported by The Wall Street Journal and Politico but not released by the White House, the task force will examine risks to civil liberties, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure, with particular attention to biosecurity and water supplies. Its remit also covers finance, energy, transport, agriculture and emergency services. It will consider requiring AI laboratories to report breaches, hacks and “jailbreaks,” possibly through automatic alerts, and must submit recommendations within 120 days.
Trump argues that regulation must not stifle AI development, while the charter warns against both overregulation and regulatory capture. The group includes Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and external members David Sacks and Condoleezza Rice. Democrats Lori Trahan and Josh Gottheimer questioned whether the initiative can provide durable safeguards without congressional authorization, while Politico reported that several senior Republicans were not briefed before its announcement.
