Uber has begun testing autonomous vehicles on the streets of Manchester, its first step towards rolling out robotaxis across the UK. The cars use technology from partners Pony and Verne, with whom Uber recently launched Europe’s first autonomous taxi service in Zagreb. Tests involve mapping the city with a safety driver behind the wheel and no passengers, mirroring limited passenger services that began in London last month using Wayve-supplied cars. The rollout faces mounting opposition from driver unions GMB and ADCU, which warn thousands of jobs could be lost.
