Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 as Como equal Champions League record
Fenerbahce produced one of the Champions League’s biggest surprises by beating Liverpool 3-2 in Istanbul, twice recovering from behind to secure their first victory of the campaign. Trey Nyoni put Liverpool ahead in the 25th minute with a deflected volley, but Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later when his free kick also took a decisive touch off the defensive wall. Liverpool regained the lead in the 69th minute, as Cody Gakpo crossed for Alexander Isak to score with a close-range header.
Fenerbahce responded almost immediately. Gakpo inadvertently diverted N’Golo Kante’s cross away from Alisson, allowing Archie Brown to finish at the far post. Brown then helped create the winner, sending the ball back into the area after a long throw, where Vedat Muriqi headed past Alisson in the 79th minute. The result ended Liverpool’s run of three consecutive wins and gave interim coach Dirk Kuyt a memorable victory over his former club, for whom he played more than 200 matches between 2006 and 2012. Fenerbahce moved to 19th with five points, while Liverpool dropped to eighth on nine.
Como meanwhile equalled the competition’s record winning margin with a remarkable 9-1 victory at Lens. The result matched Liverpool’s and Real Madrid’s eight-goal-margin wins and made Como only the second team after Bayern Munich to score nine in a Champions League match. Their third win in four games lifted them to fourth place with nine points and continued an outstanding debut campaign in which they have scored 19 goals. Elsewhere, Manchester City beat Leipzig 3-2 after Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal, while Real Madrid maintained a perfect start by defeating AEK Athens 3-2.
