Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot ordered to series at Hulu
Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files to series after picking up its pilot in February. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will play new characters rather than updated versions of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder: two highly decorated but sharply contrasting FBI agents who develop an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-closed division investigating unexplained phenomena.
Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot and will remain an executive producer, with Jennifer Yale serving as showrunner. The filmmaker said the production aims to honor what made Chris Carter’s original series resonate while finding a distinct route into its world. Carter is also an executive producer, alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, while Deadwyler and Patel are among the co-executive producers. Proximity Media and 20th Television are producing.
The project follows Coogler’s historic awards run with the vampire drama Sinners, which received a record 16 Oscar nominations and won four awards, including screenplay for Coogler and best actor for Michael B. Jordan. The original X-Files ran for 11 seasons on Fox, earning 61 Emmy nominations and 15 wins while becoming a major influence on science-fiction television and popular culture. The new series also reunites Deadwyler and Patel after their appearance together in Station Eleven.
