Democratic socialist Nithya Raman defeats Karen Bass in Los Angeles mayoral race
Nithya Raman has been elected mayor of Los Angeles, narrowly defeating incumbent Karen Bass by just over 52% to 48%. The progressive urban planner and city councilmember, who had initially endorsed Bass and entered the race only hours before the filing deadline, overcame her early status as a long-shot candidate with support from the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and its volunteer network.
The contest exposed dissatisfaction with the city’s direction despite both candidates belonging to its progressive political mainstream. Bass, who had never previously lost an election, faced low approval ratings and criticism over homelessness, housing costs, the response to the Palisades fire and the city’s large budget shortfall. Los Angeles has also been affected by the Trump administration’s deportation campaign and a struggling Hollywood economy.
Raman promised greater urgency in lowering rents, reducing homelessness, improving streets and public safety. She narrowly advanced past former reality television star and registered Republican Spencer Pratt in the primary before gaining support across the city. Her victory reflects a broader anti-establishment mood, as well as frustration among residents who believe Bass’s administration failed to improve conditions for communities under the greatest financial pressure.
