French Prosecutors Investigate Deadly Shooting Near Paris as Suspected Terror Attack
French prosecutors are investigating a shooting in the towns of Trappes and La Verrière, about 20 kilometres west of Paris, as a suspected terrorist attack. A man fired at multiple people from a vehicle as he travelled through the area at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, killing at least one person and wounding four. Police arrested the suspect in nearby Coignières. Emergency services remained at the scene, and authorities cautioned that the death toll could change.
Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the attacker had targeted several people along his route. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the case as “very serious” and said the security forces and judiciary were fully mobilised.
The attack comes amid heightened tension in France following serious street violence during protests over the cost of living the previous weekend. Further demonstrations are expected, with police planning a larger presence after overnight curfews were imposed in several cities. France has experienced fewer Islamist attacks in recent years than during the period that included the November 2015 Paris attacks, in which 130 people were killed, but officials continue to warn that the threat remains and say intelligence services regularly prevent attempted attacks.
