The Legend of Korra Season 3 Is One of the Best Seasons in TV History
The third season of The Legend of Korra, subtitled Book 3: Change, stands out by exploring the unintended consequences of Avatar Korra’s (Janet Varney) decisions. After she leaves the spirit portals open following Harmonic Convergence, spiritual energy floods the world and unexpectedly grants airbending abilities to ordinary citizens. While Korra travels to find these individuals and rebuild the Air Nation, this shift also empowers Zaheer (Henry Rollins), an imprisoned anarchist leading the Red Lotus—a group determined to end the Avatar cycle and dismantle global order.
Zaheer breaks out his deadly allies: lavabender Ghazan (Peter Giles), combustion bender P’Li (Kristy Wu), and waterbender Ming Hua (Grey DeLisle). Fully animated by Studio Mir, the season showcases inventive combat, including high-stakes battles featuring Korra’s father Tonraq (James Remar) and mentor Tenzin (J.K. Simmons). The narrative reaches a dark turning point when Zaheer kills the corrupt Earth Queen by suffocating her, throwing Ba Sing Se into turmoil. Abandoning the previous romantic love triangle with Mako (David Faustino) and Asami (Seychelle Gabriel), the story matures as Korra grapples with Zaheer’s compelling ideological critique of corrupt rulers.
