Comma.ai hands-off driving tech under federal probe after fatal crashes

Comma.ai, the startup founded by George Hotz, faces a U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation after five reported crashes involving its aftermarket hands-off driver assistance devices, including two fatal crashes that killed three people. Regulators said the devices failed to detect or respond to slow or stopped vehicles in the same lane; up to 11 people were injured across four incidents, some seriously. At least some crashes, including a fatal one, may have involved modified “forked” versions of Comma’s openpilot software.
