Third malaria death confirmed in cluster near Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt authorities reported a third malaria death after a rare outbreak linked to air traffic. Two Schwanheim residents near the airport tested positive for Plasmodium falciparum despite never visiting a malaria-endemic region or working at the airport; one died. Officials believe an infected mosquito arrived on a plane or in luggage. Six airport workers contracted the disease in July, and two of them died. Operator Fraport has set mosquito traps and is sending specimens to a lab in Antwerp, Belgium.
