Trump’s Greenland security pact may mainly recast rights already in older defence deals

A new U.S.–Denmark–Greenland accord on the security of the Danish autonomous territory could ease nearly two years of Washington pressure and keep territorial integrity and sovereignty as red lines, though its full text is not yet public. Donald Trump can claim a win while allies say pressure improved U.S. chances to expand a military presence. Much of that was already possible under the 1951 defence agreement, updated in 2004 with Greenland’s Home Rule Government, which granted wide U.S. military rights; in the Cold War Washington had 17 installations and more than 10,000 personnel there, versus only Pituffik today.
