Study Suggests Venus Slowly Swallowed Its Moon

University of California, Riverside researchers led by astrophysicist Steven Kane propose Venus lost its moon not in a collision but when the planet’s slow rotation and gravity gradually pulled the satellite inward until it fragmented and was absorbed. Earth’s faster 24-hour spin instead pushes its moon outward by about 1.5 inches per year.
