Kimberly Guilfoyle asked to resign as US ambassador to Greece
The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece, ending a diplomatic tenure of less than a year. The decision followed reports that Donald Trump and secretary of state Marco Rubio were furious over allegations that Guilfoyle sought money from Trump donor Eric Deters in return for access to administration officials and help with his tax and legal problems.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Signal messages show that Guilfoyle pressed Deters in July 2025, days before her Senate confirmation hearing, to cover a $100,000 American Express bill and assured him the transfer would not appear anywhere. She allegedly said she had contacted the IRS commissioner and the justice department on his behalf. Deters, who says he paid her about $300,000 over the years without receiving a favor, described the request as an attempted quid pro quo.
The Journal also reported allegations that Guilfoyle accepted improper gifts and services, threatened an official in Greece and promoted the interests of Greek company Aktor during official engagements. Her lawyer, Jesse Binnall, disputes the authenticity of the messages. Guilfoyle, a longtime Trump ally and former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr, was publicly praised by the White House as “a wonderful asset” as her departure was announced.
