Heavy rain floods thousands of tents across the Gaza Strip
Torrential rainfall across the Gaza Strip has inundated makeshift encampments, submerging thousands of tents that house displaced Palestinians. In areas including Deir al-Balah, the sudden downpours rapidly overwhelmed informal shelter sites, leaving displaced residents directly exposed to harsh weather and compounding an already severe humanitarian crisis.
The situation has been drastically aggravated by collapsing sanitation infrastructure. Overflowing sewage has mixed directly with the floodwaters that surround and seep into family shelters. This toxic combination has severely degraded already precarious living conditions within the crowded encampments, exposing communities to foul standing water without functioning municipal drainage systems to clear the deluge.
With little outside assistance available, residents have been forced to rely on rudimentary containment methods to protect their living spaces. Families are frantically working to salvage their few belongings, constructing makeshift earthen barriers around their tents and bailing out water by hand. Despite these labor-intensive efforts, large quantities of essential supplies, bedding, and everyday items have been thoroughly soaked and rendered unusable, stripping displaced families of the vital necessities required to endure displacement.
