Manchester United rally from 2-0 down as Cunha double beats Roma
Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, recovered from a 2-0 half-time deficit to beat Roma in the Champions League, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice. The night echoed Carrick’s own two-goal display as a United player in a 7-1 quarter-final second-leg win over Roma in 2007; this time his future as manager was at stake amid fan anger at the ownership. United had been poor before the break, and the score flattered them.
Cunha finished after an error by Leonardo Balerdi and later hammered the winner in off the near post from a pass by substitute Shea Lacey. Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty. In the 90th minute Cunha was sent off for a second yellow after a lunge at Balerdi. Roma’s first goal came when Diogo Dalot, playing left-back with Luke Shaw injured, was caught high; Rodrigo Mora found Matías Soulé, who beat Senne Lammens. For the second, Leny Yoro retreated, Harry Maguire miskicked to Soulé, the shot struck Ayden Heaven’s hand and Donyell Malen converted. Carrick now faces Aston Villa at home in the Premier League on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Villarreal 6-0, four up after 17 minutes through João Neves, Desiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz, with Ruiz adding a fifth and David Boly a sixth; PSG kept a 100% Champions League start, led the table by three points and have won 10 in a row after taking two points from their first three Ligue 1 games, including a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco. Inter beat Feyenoord 3-0 at De Kuip (Yann Bisseck, Pio Esposito, Piotr Zielinski). Sporting Lisbon, a day after parting with Rui Borges and under Tiago Fernandes, won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge against Shakhtar Donetsk through Issa Doumbia. Aleksey Batrakov scored in the 12th and 15th minutes as Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0 at Rams Park. Lask won 4-0 against Slovan Bratislava; Bodø/Glimt drew 0-0 with Lille. Stadiums observed a silence for Jesús de Miguel, who died after a collision for Tenerife against Andorra in Spain’s second division.
