Family of Iranian twins sentenced to death and jail appeals to UN

The family of twin sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, both 21, has appealed to the UN after they were sentenced for joining protests against the Iranian regime. British human rights lawyers filed a formal submission on the family's behalf, which could prompt UN human rights talks with Tehran. IRGC officers took the twins from their beds eight months ago; they were tried on moharebeh charges for protesting in Isfahan on 8–9 January. Taraneh received a death sentence and Romina 25 years in prison; activists fear the execution could be fast-tracked. President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN General Assembly this week that Iran is "ready for dialogue and diplomacy."
